Jacksonville Opens First HBCU-Inspired Elementary
Jacksonville, Florida has marked a significant milestone in educational innovation with the inauguration of Becoming Collegiate Academy, the city's first elementary school inspired by the rich traditions and values of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This pioneering institution is designed to infuse the HBCU spirit into the educational journey of its young students, starting from their earliest academic experiences.
Cultivating an HBCU Culture in Elementary Education
Cameron Frazier, the visionary Executive Director of Becoming Collegiate Academy, is at the helm of this transformative initiative. His mission is to transpose the core elements of the HBCU experience—community, culture, and rigorous academic standards—into the grade school setting. “We are dedicated to mirroring the HBCU culture by emphasizing the development of positive relationships, celebrating cultural identity, and maintaining high academic expectations," Frazier explains.
The school environment itself is a vibrant homage to HBCUs. Upon entering the academy, students and visitors are greeted by an array of HBCU flags, symbolizing the deep-rooted heritage and ongoing influence of these institutions. Classroom decor further reflects this ethos, with educational materials that pay tribute to significant African American figures and institutions, from Alcorn State University to literary giant Zora Neale Hurston.
A Vision of Representation and Excellence
Frazier strongly believes in the power of representation, particularly the impact of having educators who reflect the demographic backgrounds of their students. "It’s crucial for our students to see themselves in their teachers and leaders. This not only reinforces their sense of identity but also elevates their academic engagement and aspirations," he states.
The academy has already begun to fulfill this vision by impacting both students and teachers alike. Ahmad Levy, a former student of Frazier's and now a teacher at the academy, embodies this cycle of inspiration and impact. "Having a Black male teacher as a role model during my formative years inspired me to pursue a career in education, to be that same positive figure for the next generation," says Levy.
Expanding Horizons from the Ground Up
Currently, Becoming Collegiate Academy serves 80 students across kindergarten and first grade, with plans to expand one grade level each year. This gradual growth ensures that each cohort receives a tailored educational experience that builds a solid foundation for lifelong learning and success.
Frazier envisions his students, affectionately called 'brown bears,' as future leaders and change-makers. "Our goal is to nurture these young minds in an environment overflowing with love and high expectations. They are not just preparing for academic success but also for meaningful contributions to society," he asserts.
As the school continues to grow, it remains open to new student applications and is actively seeking passionate educators who are committed to carrying forward its mission.
Join the Celebration and Transformation
The community is invited to participate in the upcoming ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday at 10 a.m., marking a new chapter in educational excellence inspired by HBCU legacy. This event promises to be not just a celebration of a new beginning but also a reaffirmation of the enduring values that HBCUs bring to the educational landscape.
Becoming Collegiate Academy isn't just teaching students; it's preparing them to be the bearers of a legacy rich with history, achievement, and community spirit—principles that are cornerstones of the HBCU experience.
