University Introduces Fresh Academic & Athletics Logos
With a decade of record enrollment, infrastructural growth, and program expansion, the University has embarked on a rebranding journey to embody its success and ethos.
The new academic logo emanates from the University Marketing and Communications team's endeavor to encapsulate Delaware State University's historical legacy, dynamic present, and promising future.
Following extensive market research and input from over 600 stakeholders – students, faculty, staff, leadership, alumni, and community members – a collective resonance emerged with the iconic flagpoles gracing the main campus entrance in Dover, Delaware. These poles, accompanied by the ever-present U.S. flag, symbolize the diverse nations represented by the University’s students, faculty, and staff. As the sole HBCU in Delaware, the institution maintains ties with 23 countries worldwide.
Alumni and students alike recognize the flagpoles as a pivotal first impression and gathering place for shared moments, from shuttle rendezvous to post-graduation snapshots.
“This spot is etched in our memory from our initial campus tour in middle or high school,” remarked Josh Holloway, Vice President of the 2023-2024 Student Government Association. “Even today, it's ‘Meet me at the flagpoles!’ ”
Leah Williams, National President of the Delaware State University Alumni Association, highlighted the involvement of DSU graduates in the design. “Leveraging the insights of several alumni, we crafted a design that connects generations of Hornets, serving as university ambassadors,” Ms. Williams commented.
Dr. Dawn Mosley, Senior Associate Vice President of Marketing, expressed enthusiasm for the new emblem, featuring flags representing diversity, a mound symbolizing a robust foundation, and traditional blue and red hues signifying inspiration and loyalty. Jasmine Couch, lead designer, the entire Marketing team, and participant feedback collectively shaped this significant design.
In the realm of Athletics, the iconic Hornet mascot, a source of affection for generations, now sports a contemporary makeover to steer the University's Hornet spirit into the future. Originating from the “Blue Hornet” moniker for the football team's blue bus, which carried them to away games, the term “Hornet” became synonymous with the institution's sports teams upon joining the Colored Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1945.
Alecia Shields-Gadson, Director of Athletics, stated, “With DSU’s most diverse intercollegiate athletics program, it was time for a modern, impactful appearance. This refreshed Hornet emblem heralds a new era for Delaware State University's sports teams. It represents the relentless determination our teams exhibit on the field.”
The Hornet redesign owes its brilliance to the joint creative efforts of Antonio “JR” Fuondjing and Jasmine Couch from the marketing team.
This logo debut signals a new phase. Dr. Mosley shared that the upcoming priority is rejuvenating the University’s brand elements to weave a comprehensive narrative.
“Our students are our most compelling narrators; hence, we've equipped them with a compelling backstory for the new emblem,” Dr. Mosley conveyed. “We're empowering our students, alumni, parents, staff, allies, and supporters to proudly display the new DSU and Hornet symbols across all platforms. This transformational mark amplifies our identity and anticipates our bright future. The new DSU emblem mirrors the way many have referenced us for years. Now it is official, and we are excited to embrace it. We are DSU!”
The fresh logos will soon roll out, including merchandise in anticipation of DSU’s Homecoming on October 21. Those interested in merchandise featuring the new logos can visit http://www.HBCUdsu.com.
Over time, the Marketing and Communications department will implement the updated designs across all channels.
