At 83, Marie Fowler achieved a lifelong dream by earning her doctoral degree in divinity from Howard University. This accomplishment is more than an academic milestone; it is a testament to her unwavering faith and perseverance.

Fowler, who believes her journey was a calling from God, spent the last three years studying at Howard University School of Divinity. Despite earning a bachelor's degree and two master's degrees from Maple Springs Baptist Bible College and Seminary, she felt a divine push to continue her education at Howard.

"I didn't think I'd go beyond one semester," Fowler said. "I had been out of school since 1959 and doubted if I could retain information."

Her determination was fueled by her parents' experiences, especially her father's encouragement. "My mom and dad were born in an era when it was illegal for them to learn to read and write," she recalled. "We taught my dad how to read and write so he wouldn't have to sign with an X." Her father's motto, "A mind is a terrible thing to waste," resonated deeply with her.

Dr. Alice Ogden Bellis, Professor of Hebrew Bible, praised Fowler's enthusiasm and dedication, noting, "She was the life of the party. She knew what she wanted and she came here and did that."
