Jacoby Jones, HBCU Legend and NFL Star, Passes Away
HBCU and NFL standout Jacoby Jones has passed away just three days after his 40th birthday. Jones, a celebrated former player for Lane College, left a significant mark both on and off the field. He was notably honored in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Hall of Fame earlier this year.
Jones, who showcased exceptional talent during his tenure from 2003 to 2006 at Lane, earned accolades such as Offensive Player of the Year and Special Team Player of the Year. His dynamic play was crucial in Lane College's offensive strategies, which were orchestrated by then-coach Johnnie Cole. Beyond his college achievements, both Lane College and Marion Abramson High School in New Orleans recognized his contributions by inducting him into their respective Halls of Fame.
In the NFL, Jones began his career with the Houston Texans after being drafted in the third round in 2007. His NFL journey spanned nine seasons, with memorable stints at the Baltimore Ravens, San Diego Chargers, and Pittsburgh Steelers. Among his many professional highlights, Jones secured a spot in NFL history with a 108-yard kickoff return in Super Bowl XLVII, marking the longest play in the game's history. This performance followed his 70-yard touchdown catch that was pivotal in the Ravens' playoff campaign that year.
After retiring from professional play, Jones returned to his alma mater to coach wide receivers, sharing his vast knowledge and experience with upcoming athletes.
Jones was remembered by his former Texans teammate J.J. Watt as "one of the most fun-loving teammates and people," known for his perpetual smile and vibrant spirit. The sports world mourns the loss of such a spirited and impactful player and coach.
