Howard's Homecoming Tailgate Turns Family-Friendly
This year, Howard University's homecoming celebration is taking a new turn, shifting away from the traditional Tailgate Party to introduce more family-friendly events. As one of the nation's premier historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), Howard is reimagining its centennial homecoming to cater to a broader audience, including families and future Bison.
A New Vision for Homecoming
While the famous Tailgate Party has been a staple of Howard's homecoming, this year marks a departure from this tradition. Instead, the university is planning a variety of events that promise to be inclusive of all attendees, from students and alumni to community members and their families. Scheduled activities include a Student Fashion Show, Greek Step Show, Yardfest, Homecoming Parade, Young Alumni Day Party Brunch, and an Alumni Jazz Brunch, celebrating a century of Bison spirit and legacy.
Celebrating a Century of Bison Excellence
The first Howard Homecoming, held on November 27, 1924, was a simple football game against Lincoln University of Pennsylvania. This year, the events from October 13 to October 20 will honor the rich history and vibrant culture of Howard, known as "The Mecca" to its alumni. The university aims to create an engaging week of events that resonate with everyone connected to Howard, whether they are past, current, or prospective students.
Howard's Legacy and Influence
Howard University is not just a beacon of academic excellence; it is also a cultural hub that has produced some of the most influential figures in American history, including Vice President Kamala Harris, Oscar winner Samuel L. Jackson, and the late actor Chadwick Boseman. By transforming the homecoming experience into a more inclusive and family-oriented affair, Howard continues to uphold its legacy as a central pillar of Black education and culture.
Engaging the Bison Family
David Bennett, Howard's senior vice president of Development and Alumni Relations, emphasized the university's commitment to making this centennial homecoming memorable for all. "It’s our intention to create a week of events that appeal to everyone – past, current, and even future Bison," stated Bennett. This new approach is expected to draw even greater enthusiasm from the Howard community as they come together to celebrate 100 years of homecoming traditions.By focusing on a broader range of activities, Howard University is setting a precedent for how HBCUs can evolve their traditional events to embrace a wider community, ensuring that the legacy of the Bison continues to inspire and unite generations.
