HBCU+: Revolutionizing Black Streaming Networks

In a groundbreaking move, Urban Edge Network, LLC (UEN), under the leadership of Hardy Pelt and Todd Brown, is reshaping the landscape of broadcast networks with the introduction of HBCU+.

According to Sports Illustrated, UEN's HBCU+ streaming network, launched in 2021, has swiftly become a force to be reckoned with, reaching an impressive 300 million devices globally. This achievement marks a significant milestone in the traditionally underserved realm of HBCU sports broadcasting.

Recognizing the longstanding challenges faced by HBCUs in monetizing their sports properties, Pelt, UEN's founding member and Chief Revenue Officer, teamed up with industry veteran Brown.

Brown's extensive experience, spanning leadership roles at TheGrio, Ebony, Jet, Comcast, and Viacom, provided invaluable insight into navigating the complexities of the media landscape. Together, they spearheaded the development of HBCU+ to address the disparities faced by Black-owned media companies.

Despite encountering initial resistance within the industry, Brown and Pelt remained steadfast in their mission to drive change. Through innovative platform design, HBCU+ provides HBCUs with access to revenue streams traditionally dominated by predominantly white-owned networks.

This transformative approach not only revolutionizes the broadcasting landscape but also serves as a lifeline for the financial sustainability of historically Black institutions.

A strategic partnership with Amagi has further propelled HBCU+ and UEN, facilitating access to cutting-edge technology and programmatic strategies. This integration aims to maximize revenue opportunities for HBCU partners, offering vital support to athletic departments facing financial constraints.

The collaboration with the NBA G League Texas Legends and the inaugural Florida Beach Bowl represents significant milestones for HBCU+ and UEN. Additionally, the partnership with the Impact Network has expanded UEN’s broadcasting reach to 70% of the country, cementing its status as the premier Black-owned network for HBCU sports.

HBCU+ stands as a beacon of innovation in the realm of Black college sports networks, providing 24/7 access to live and on-demand HBCU games, sports events, original shows, films, podcasts, and more across multiple platforms, including Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Samsung TV, iOS, and Android.

With its groundbreaking approach to broadcasting, HBCU+ is leading the charge in empowering HBCUs and amplifying their impact on the global stage.
